Previous Tips Of The Week

Flowers

Now is the time to pot up tender perennials from your summer displays and keep them under cover for winter protection.

Bulbs

When planting crocus corms plant several in a group - the size of a saucer mixed or of one colour, they make a greater impact as a group.

Vegetables

Lift all the potatoes, dry them off and put them in hessian or brown paper bags out of the frost to store them. Keep an eye out for signs of disease and remove any damage potatoes as they will quickly affect the whole bag.

Fruit

Finish picking the apples - wrap each in a 1/4 sheet of newspaper and store in boxes out of the frost and away from anywhere that the occasional fruit going bad might leak onto carpet or through a ceiling.

Roses

Dead head and top the bush roses back to reduce the wind rock.

Weeds

Many weeds can grow and flower through the autumn and winter - have a great clear up. Especially try and remove cleavers - the goose grass Galium aparine which is germinating right now with the autumn rain. By mid April it could be a clump 300 x 300mm and growing fast.
